Shravan is a mythological character from Ramayana, an ancient Sanskrit epic. His parents were hermits. Having aged, they, therefore, wanted him to take them to the forty places of pilgrimage. It is a typical Hindu belief that a pilgrimage to the various shrines and holy places, undertaken in old age, purifies the soul.
Without the means for any transport, he decided to put each of his parents in a basket and tie it to the end of a bamboo pole, which he would shoulder while on their pilgrimage.
Shravan, at Nirantharaa, is our creation to give life to this mythologically significant character and imbibe a social message. The wooden bowls delicately placed on the shoulders of Shravan, a Dokra figurine, are made of Channapatna craft .
The wooden bowls delicately placed on the shoulders on ‘shravan’ are made in the rich traditional craft form of Channapatna. Channapatna is a small town between Bangalore and Mysore that is devoted to the art of
toy-making. It is an old tradition that has survived many generations. This craft of toy-making at Channapatna dates back to the 18th century.
